ABOUT

The HIT Team

Home In Transition  (HIT) founders Jennifer Tassie and Julie Carter are lifelong friends who came together as business partners in their late 40's. They saw a need and knew they had something valuable to offer those experiencing emptying nests, renovations, divorce, moves or aging parents. Their skills and personalities complement each other, and their ease and comfort with each other quickly transfers to any project they tackle. In their own words:

Julie Carter - HIT founding partner

Julie Carter:

I'm a no-nonsense organizer with a minimalist bend – more interested in practical solutions and sound advice than perfectionism and Pinterest.

It started with decluttering my mother's fridge (she has a blind spot for best before dates) then a paid gig with a wise woman who, ironically, encouraged me to decouple my need for meaning from my work. Twenty years later I happily make a living helping people through life's transitions with a lightened load and a sense of accomplishment.

My background includes several years in social services as a front-line worker at an emergency women's shelter, five seasons cooking and managing a remote bush camp, several years running a small catering business, various writing and editing roles and 12 years in digital media and marketing. The experience gained from these diverse roles has given me a unique set of skills and the ability to work with a variety of personalities. Organizing satisfies both my desire to help people and to manage complex projects with lots of moving parts. I am a member of the Professional Organizers of Canada and working towards becoming a Trained Professional Organizer.

Jennifer Tassie - HIT founding partner

Jennifer Tassie:

Looking for a change after a varied career, I honed in on a small stint that had a big impact on me: helping a friend prepare her family home for sale.  It was a row house in Cabbagetown that had been in their family since 1931 and was filled to the brim with treasures (some more pleasant than others...). As I sorted through the layers, I found myself intrigued by what people keep and why. I found that I enjoyed the process of helping someone get out from under the weight of their stuff and to find a new purpose or place for something that was long forgotten and sometimes buried. Those who know me might be surprised at this endeavour but my mantra is “Do as I say, not as I do”. It seems to be working.

I have worked in several fields including design, film and travel. Working for myself and the sense of accomplishment I get from a finished HIT job are an extremely satisfying combination. I love helping people get rid of the crap, uncover once-loved items, and find a way to make them a part of their home again.
